APPENDIX B:

ADIRONDACK NORTH COUNTRY ASSOCIATION
A PROFILE OF WORK ACTIVITY:


AGRICULTURE: To build upon and expand the region’s agricultural economy ANCA has worked to enhance the stability, growth and profitability of agriculture producers within the ANCA region.
  • Continuation of a six-year partnership with the NYS Grasslands Conservation Initiative.
  • Provide forums for producer education in the areas of Permaculture Design, Wholistic Management, and Marketing Grass Fed Products.

  • Work in partnership with service providers such as Cooperative Extension, Heifer International, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Paul Smiths College Culinary Arts Division.

  • Revise the Pasture Raised Meat Directory with the addition of more farm locations, original recipes and cut descriptions provided by the culinary students at Paul Smith’s College.

  • Develop a project-partner grant with Heifer International to support a farming alternative farmers’ group that will be focused on the revitalization of small farms in the region.

  • Provide regional product marketing and distribution through coordinated efforts with Adirondack Harvest and other local product marketing initiatives such as Lewis County’s “New York Farm Day” initiative.

NATURAL RESOURCES: To retain existing jobs, create new jobs, and promote value-added processing in the forest industry ANCA has provided technical assistance to small and medium sized wood products businesses. In addition ANCA, in partnership with NYSDEC, has provided land stewardship and forest management assistance to communities impacted by the 1998 Ice Storm.
  • Provide internet marketing services through www.Adirondackwood.com.

  • Provide technical support services to businesses in the areas of material procurement, marketing, production and financial planning.

  • Provide information and referral to North Country wood based companies.

  • Provide assistance with major expansion opportunities using the potential for rail services, such as the work with 3B-Timber.

  • Provide wood supply information to companies such as NPG Power in Lyonsdale and other North Country ventures.

TOURISM: To provide recreational corridors and regional byway planning and promotion as a strong component of community planning, ANCA has worked to diversify and strengthen the tourism economy. ANCA has presented the Adirondack North Country as a premier destination with unique cultural, recreational, scenic, historic and artistic attractions.
  • Develop a major marketing campaign with the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council to market the Adirondack North Country Byways through print, television and the internet. Print a revised copy of the ANCA byway map.

  • Identify communities and projects that can benefit from the Federal Highway Bill TEA-21 funding.

  • Provide regional planning for tourism and economic development through the byway corridor management planning process.

  • Implement community projects and regional planning for byways such as the Olympic and Adirondack, that completed corridor management plans with ANCA.

  • Provide organizational support in the committee work of major regional recreational planning projects such as the Adirondack Park Mountain Bicycling Initiative and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

  • Partner with regional initiatives such as the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program.

  • Support the development of regional marketing initiatives which would allow tourists access to various attractions using one comprehensive pass or ticket via an “Adirondack Pass” type of ticket.

ENTERPRISE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: To work as a catalyst for regional economic development through direct involvement with new projects, ventures and community based planning and enterprise development, ANCA has made economic development support a cornerstone of ANCA’ regional and local community assistance efforts.
  • Market the North Country as an attractive location to live, recreate and do business through print publications and ANCA’s web site www.adirondack.org

  • Create product identification through promotion and use of ANCA’s product logo: Adirondack Made

  • Build regional marketing and branding through partnerships with the St. Lawrence County Chamber’s Adirondack North Country Trading Cooperative and the work of Lewis County in their marketing of “New York Farm Day.”

  • Build market diversification and opportunities through hosting wholesale events such as Buyer Days and the Rochester Gift Show and supporting retail venues for small gift manufacturers and crafters.

  • Address infrastructure needs inclusive of telecommunications access through support of various regional initiatives such as the Adirondack Community Fiber Network.

  • Support the continued reuse of the Adirondack Rail Corridor and assist in the planning for rail services to all appropriate North Country communities.

  • Provide community planning services to communities in the ANCA region.

SERVICES AND CULTURE: To provide support to projects throughout the region in the promotion and development of education, the arts and health services, ANCA has worked to inventory and promote the region’s valuable service and cultural resources.
  • Identify and promote opportunities and needs in the areas of education, the arts and health services through regional planning projects.
