Over 100 Adirondack North Country tourism and economic development people attend ANCA launch of innovative website June 4, 2009 – The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) today launched a new website designed to enhance the experience of travelers to the 14-county Adirondack North Country Region. More than 1,116 communities, events, and attractions along three Scenic Byways are featured. The initial three routes are the Adirondack Trail, the Olympic Scenic Byway, and the Central Adirondack Trail. Other byways will be added to the website in the future. "All of us at ANCA are proud of the collaboration with community leaders on these scenic byways that has brought us to this exciting day," said Terry Martino, Executive Director of ANCA. "It’s an important step forward in achieving ANCA’s mission to promote economic development throughout the North Country." Read more... Sidewalk interview survey of Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways visitors--First of Its Kind June 4, 2009 – The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) today released the results of an important new survey of visitors to the Adirondack North Country. Targeted at "boomer and mature" first time and occasional visitors, this qualitative survey is the first to provide the results of face-to-face interviews about why travelers come to the Adirondack Region. The results and implications for tourism related businesses on North Country Scenic Byways were presented to more than 100 local community leaders and owners of tourism services and attractions, and hospitality businesses at a meeting held at the Adirondack Museum. The survey was conducted during the period starting on August 15 and ending on October 15, 2008. Read more... Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Report Released June 3, 2009 - A long-awaited report that profiles all the 103 municipalities that comprise the Adirondack Park was released today by the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV), one of the leading sponsors of the study. The report—the result of a two-year research effort by and for the communities of the park—is intended to provide a data-rich, factual baseline for discussion and planning of park issues at both the local and regional levels. The assessment employs a modular format detailing community life, government operations, land use, infrastructure, emergency services, education and park-wide demographics. A computer disc containing individual community profiles is included. Soon, an "Access" formatted CD will be available offering substantial information on both a community and park-wide basis. Grazing Schools to be Offered for Farmers February 11, 2009 - North Country farmers use grasslands to pasture livestock and lower production costs by taking advantage of a "free" feed source. Farmers Discuss Energy Saving Practices December 19, 2008 - The Adirondack North Country Association hosted its Ag Energy Workshop and Annual Meeting on October 30, 2008 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Chateaugay, NY. The Ag Energy Workshop featured Commissioner Patrick Hooker, NYS Department of Ag and Markets as keynote speaker. The ANCA Board of Directors’ Meeting took place after the Ag Workshop, and in the annual reappointment of officers and appointment of new directors, Howard Lowe of Clinton County was appointed to the Board. Delegation Presents North Country Agenda in Washington By Dan Heath, Staff Writer, Press Republican Plattsburgh - A 14-member delegation recently met with federal leaders for the annual North Country Day in Washington. The group was headed by Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas. "The North Country has been punching above its weight in Washington for the last several years, but it takes a coordinated and pragmatic agenda backed up with consistent messaging for a small area like ours to be effective," he said. Conference Introduces Use of Wood Biomass as Alternative Heating Fuel For North Country and Adirondack Facilities Saranac Lake - On May 13th, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Energy $mart Park Initiative (E$PI) held the North Country Woody Biomass Conference at "The Wild Center" in Tupper Lake. Common Ground Forum on July 16 May 19, 2008 Dear Common Ground Colleague: Last year, one of the most important meetings in the history of the Adirondacks occurred in Long Lake, when nearly 150 people attended the Common Ground Forum and enthusiastically discussed the Blueprint for the Blue Line. New lines of communication were opened and critical issues were identified. A lot has transpired since last July, but as our economy continues to falter, a lot of work remains to be done. Economic Development Strategy Gains Momentum, Recognition April 30, 2008 - Implementation of the Saranac Lake Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) gained additional, significant traction recently, according to Keith Wells, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors’ member and head of the CEDS core team overseeing the effort. As a result of its "Green Team-Creative Core" partnership with the Syracuse Center of Excellence, the CEDS group learned it soon will receive a key marketing report that details green industry opportunities and prospects for all of central upstate New York. ANCA Awarded Several National Scenic Byway Program Grants April 29, 2008 - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has received eight marketing grants totaling $320,000 to promote Scenic Byway communities along special touring routes across the North Country region. New Board President Donald Caldera April 24, 2008 - At a special Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors’ meeting held on April 23, 2008, Donald L. Caldera was appointed to the position of ANCA Board President to succeed outgoing President, Ronald Ofner. Ofner will remain a contributing member of the Board and has recently been appointed Executive Director of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council. "I welcome this opportunity to assume the Presidency of ANCA and to help our members, businesses and communities from throughout our fourteen upstate counties to address the many economic and quality of life issues we face collectively," Caldera stated. Energy and Environment Lead Saranac Lake Economic Development Strategy March 18, 2008 - A core group of citizens has been hard at work recently on a major prong of Saranac Lake’s recently completed Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). The group, which has been meeting regularly since the strategy was finalized, has been exploring the establishment of the Saranac Lake region as a central location for applied environmental and biological enterprises that commercialize the results of research in these fields. The delegation was led by Garry Douglass, Executive Director of the North Country Chamber and included thirteen members representing North Country interests and crossborder issues. Members participated in the New York Day Legislative Breakfast Forum where Senator Schumer and Senator Clinton provided comments about the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the need for the elimination of the Alternative Minimum Tax, and discussions for a national Energy Policy. The senators were joined by Derek Douglas, Director of the NYS Office of Federal Affairs who discussed the goals of Governor Spitzer in partnering with New York businesses and communities. Lake Placid-Saranac Lake Recreation Pathway - 2007 Update For many years residents of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake have talked about building a pathway to connect their two communities. The railroad corridor provides an opportunity to bring that dream to reality because the State owns the corridor, it is 100-feet wide, and it is managed for developed recreational use. Read more... Yellow Wood Associates Presents Green Building Options to the Town of Franklin, New York On February 5, 2007, Yellow Wood Associates presented its final report to the Town of Franklin, New York on how to proceed with its buildings, using a Green Community TechnologiesSM approach. Green Community TechnologiesSM is a service provided exclusively by Yellow Wood Associates to help rural communities make choices about their infrastructure that will save money, improve municipal service delivery, and create jobs. The Town of Franklin was interested in the Green Community TechnologiesSM process as a way to help determine how to proceed with its buildings in a manner that will meet the immediate and long-term needs of the community while addressing regulatory compliance issues, minimizing costs of construction, operations, and maintenance, and reducing or eliminating negative environmental impacts. In assisting the Town, Yellow Wood’s goal was to help maximize the use of existing assets and minimize the amount of new construction required to meet Town goals. The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has added a second Community Assistant Specialist to its staff, Executive Director Terry Martino announced recently. Joining the staff is Gregory A. Hill, of Lake Clear, NY, who retired from the Adirondack Park Agency in 1996 following a lengthy career there. Hill joins Jim Ellis on ANCA’s staff in the role of helping communities fulfill their economic development and quality of life goals. Read more...
