Recent News 2006Future Visions for the North Country Annual Meeting Luncheon and Forum on November 30, 2006 November 17, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association will host its Annual Meeting Luncheon and Forum on November 30, 2006 at the Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake, NY. The afternoon session will begin at 1:00 PM, following a noon luncheon, and will feature survey research that has been conducted by Graham Cox and Jon Erickson of the University of Vermont, and William Porter and Annie Woods of SUNY-ESF’s Adirondack Ecological Center. The afternoon forum – "Change By Design: Future Visions for the North Country " – captures interesting viewpoints from local and regional community members about the future of environmental stewardship and economic development: Is there a preference for locally owned businesses? Do community members value the rural quality of our region? Can our communities enjoy the benefits of 21st century technology? How would community members prioritize their investment commitments if they had a choice? Read more... ANCA Represented at National Conference Grazing Specialists to Speak at National Conference November 14, 2006 - Managed grazing, or grass-based agriculture, has gained in both acceptance and adoption by farmers over the last 15 to 20 years. In particular, the last five years have seen a rapid rise in the number of farms that have changed from more conventional methods to better utilization of pastures – it is being treated as a crop. This change has occurred due to a combination of factors, including tighter profit margins and more environmental awareness. Read more... Launch of Scenic Byways 2006-2007 Marketing Project October 26, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) will launch its 2006-2007 Scenic Byway Marketing Project on November 16 from 9 AM – 12 Noon at the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake, New York. The meeting will convene representatives from communities that are home to the 188-mile Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway spanning four counties from Malone to Fonda. The session will be the first in a series scheduled across the region and facilitated by Susan Fuller of Fuller Communications, of Malone, New York. Read more... Strategic Action Agenda October 26, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors developed a Strategic Action Agenda that was distributed to the gubernatorial candidates, Eliot Spitzer and John Faso, and copied to Democratic and Republican county chairs and members of the Adirondack North Country Legislative Delegation. Through the action agenda ANCA's Board has worked to alter misleading perceptions that "Downstate New York" equals "economy" and "Upstate New York" equals "environment." Read more... Alliance of Adirondack Groups Send a 'Blue Print for the Blue Line' to Gubernatiorial Candidates Non-traditional Allies Come Together on Common Ground Issues October 24, 2006 - An alliance of over 25 local leaders from organizations that are directly involved in the economic, environmental and social future of New York State’s Adirondack Park has produced a "Blue Print for the Blue Line" and is calling on the gubernatorial candidates to address their concerns. Together, they represent leaders of nonprofit organizations, municipal governments, businesses, economic development, and environmental interests and work directly with constituents within the Adirondack Park and beyond. ANCA Lands Scenic Byway Program Funding for Upstate New York September 28, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has received notification from the NYS Department of Transportation that ANCA will receive three National Scenic Byways 2006 Program grant awards. Fifteen counties will benefit from the grant projects that will serve to stimulate economic development, promote highway touring, increase interest in the region, and maintain the special resources that draw people to the interconnected system of byways in Upstate New York. The total 2006 project award of $260,338 will be matched with $65,128 at the local level for a combined project cost of $325,466. Read more... Scenic Byway Community Marketing August 10, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has entered into contract with the New York State Department of Transportation to develop a Regional Marketing Project for the Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byways. The project will build upon recommendations made through community outreach and planning discussions in the preparation of the NYS Corridor Management Plans that were completed in 2005. Both routes were officially designated as New York State Scenic Byways in 1992. At this time, ANCA is receiving proposals from qualified organizations and businesses interested in facilitating community exchange meetings and work sessions with stakeholders who participated in the corridor planning work. Adirondack North Country Association Provides Funding for a Boardwalk Grant for the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks
June 21, 2006 - Adirondack North Country Association Director Don Caldera and Executive Director Terry Martino met recently with Betsy Lowe, Managing Director and Stephanie Radcliff, Director of Programs and Operations of the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks and provided a $79,000 check toward the construction costs of the Boardwalk Project. The Boardwalk is located on the museum property along the Racquette River and will allow museum visitors to have access to the shore of the river and surrounding wetlands. In addition to the wooden walkways, the project includes two observation decks where visitors can use binoculars for close-up nature observation. ANCA administered funding for the project from a New York State Department of Transportation TEA-21 Federal Highway Administration Scenic Byway Grant. Read more... NYS Budgets $300,000 for ANCA June 13, 2006 — The Board of Directors of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) is pleased to announce that $300,000 was secured in the 2006-07 state budget with the assistance of Senator Betty Little. The funding will be used to support ANCA’s regional program work, including implementing objectives identified in ANCA’s Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 that was adopted at a March 16, 2006 Board of Directors’ meeting. Celebration - Central Adirondack Trail May 25, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors cordially invites you to attend the presentation of the release of the Central Adirondack Trail Corridor Planning Project. The meeting will be a celebration of the accomplishments of over 25 communities which participated in this comprehensive tourism, planning and community development project. There will be an ANCA Board of Directors’ meeting at 10:00 am, to be followed by lunch at noon. Please join us for the noon luncheon and the afternoon presentation on June 22, 2006 at The Woods Inn, Inlet, New York from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. There is a luncheon fee of $15.00. Town of Franklin Facility Development becomes New York Demonstration Site for Green Community Technologies Service May 5, 2006 - Under the leadership of Mary Ellen Keith, Supervisor of the Town of Franklin, the Town Board of Franklin, and the Adirondack North Country Association, Inc., the Franklin Facilities Development Project becomes the first New York Demonstration Site for the Green Community TechnologiesSM service. Franklin joins the ranks of Barnstable County and Richmond, Massachusetts; Hancock, New Hampshire; Hinesburg and Thetford, Vermont; Litchfield, Maine; and Milford, Connecticut as members of the Green Community TechnologiesSM learning cohort. These eight governments are working with Yellow Wood Associates to better manage their assets, save tax dollars and green up their capital assets. Outcomes of these projects are many and varied and include for example, alternative wastewater treatment options, GASB 34 compliance, and green building design. Read more... Indian Lake Workshop on May 16 for Gift Shop Owners May 5, 2006 - Sign up for the next Marketing Toolkit workshop to be held in Indian Lake on May 16, from 8 am to 10:30 am at the Indian lake Restaurant, on Route 28. After discussion about the best marketing practices outlined in the thirty-seven page Marketing Toolkit report, the participants will critique one shop within walking distance and then briefly summarize which practices are of most interest. The workshop, co-sponsored by Indian Lake ACTION and the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), is presented by Nadia Korths, Crafts Program Coordinator with ANCA for more than ten years, and the presenter of the previous fifteen workshops. Planning for the Future of the Black River Trail Scenic Byway April 27, 2006 - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has just begun its fifth Upstate New York Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan focusing on the Black River Trail Scenic Byway project. The future of the official State Byway which cuts across St. Lawrence, Lewis, and Oneida County will be addressed in a comprehensive planning initiative. ANCA will work in partnership with the Tug Hill Commission to create a plan to stimulate economic development and tourism in the three counties. Read more... It also details a dozen regional driving tours – from the Tug Hill Plateau to Maine. Nadia Korths, Craft Programs Coordinator with the Adirondack North Country Association, helped put together the book. She spoke with Todd Moe." March 30, 2006 - As a grand finale to the popular HandMade in the Northern Forest heritage arts and crafts exhibit currently on display at the Saranac Lake Free Library, an art show reception and book release party will be held in the library’s Cantwell Community Room on April 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. The public, and especially collectors of handmade and regionally made items, is invited to attend. Artists who have participated in the exhibit will be available to discuss their work during the celebration, which will include music, refreshments and the opportunity for attendees to be among the first in the region to purchase HandMade in the Northern Forest: A guide to fine art and craft traditions in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 After a year of planning work, the Board of Directors of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) adopted a Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 at its March 16, 2006 Board of Directors’ meeting. The plan presents regional issues and opportunities and ANCA’s role as an advocate and provider of services and programs. Active throughout the North Country for fifty-two years, the Strategic Planning process reaffirmed ANCA’s commitment “to economically viable communities and an improved rural quality of life.” Read more...
