The Adirondack North Country Association, on behalf of the New York State Scenic Byways Program and the New York State Department of Transportations recently completed the New York State Scenic Byways Sign Manual. In November the manual was distributed to municipal leaders, local Byway organizers, Byway stakeholders and business operators to assist them in the steps for successful sign placement.
By establishing an integrated process of signage, the manual builds on the New York State Scenic Byways Sign Program goal to enhance the travel experience of visitors and residents and to improve the tourism and economic benefits of the Byway corridors. The Signage Manual provides information on the utilization of roadway, community, interpretive, and destination signage to establish a recognized brand identity for New York State's Scenic Byways. Also presented in the Manual are guidelines on how to enhance sign visibility and readability.
The Manual provides a system of Sign Types including Byway and Community Identification Signs, Tourist Oriented Directional Signs, Destination Markers, Pedestrian Directional Signs and Interpretive Signs that can be used along the Byways. The Manual also has information about DOT's main office and regional offices that are involved with signage. Also included is information on Signage installation, interpretive sign material, Byway Logos, Typography and Color.

Byway organizations, municipal leaders, community members and businesses will benefit from the guidelines of the Manual, which establish a direction for the signage of New York State's Byways system. If you have questions about the guidelines, Byway stakeholders are encouraged to contact the New York State Scenic Byways Program or the NYSDOT Regional Office listed in the Manual
The Manual is an important regional planning tool that will support our goals in the interpretation and marketing of the North Country Byways," Terry Martino, Executive Director noted. "The Manual is a combined work product reflecting the interests of committee members including ANCA President Ronald Ofner and Director Steve Erman who were involved in assisting with project oversight of the Manual."
The Manual is a product of a New York State Scenic Byways Program project administered by the New York State Department of Transportation and managed by the Adirondack North Country Association with a project team from Saratoga Associates and Wilbur Smith Associates. The Manual was funded, in part, by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration's National Scenic Byways Program and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. Copies of the manual can be received by contacting ANCA at 518-891-6200 or by calling the NYSDOT Scenic Byways Program at 518-457-4460.
