The Annual Meeting of the Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors was held on November 30, 2006, at the Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake. During the business meeting, Kenneth Parker, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the members of the Board with the Slate of Officers for re-election, re-appointment, and nominations for the coming year. The Board cast one vote to accept the entire list as presented and passed the presentation unanimously.
Reelected were Ronald M. Ofner of Westport, President; Paul M. Cantwell, Jr., of Malone, Vice President; Dale G. Brown of Gloversville, Treasurer; Donald L. Caldera, of Lake Placid, Secretary; Richard R. Bird of Raquette Lake, Central Region Vice President; Stephen M. Erman of Ray Brook, Northern Region Vice President; Kenneth W. Parker, of Diamond Point, Southeastern Region Vice President; and John Bartow of Adams Center, Western Region Vice President.
The Board also reappointed Peter Cayan of Clifton Park, Director from Saratoga County; and Eugene T. Falvo of Utica, Director from Oneida County.
Two new members elected to the Board of Directors were welcomed by President Ron Ofner. They are Michelle Ledoux, Director from Lewis County and Ron Montesi, Director-at-Large from Warren County. Ms. Ledoux is the Executive Director of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County in Lowville. Mr. Montesi is the Department of Environmental Conservation Personal Assistant to the Commissioner for Adirondack Affairs and lives in Queensbury.
During the business meeting, Terry Martino, ANCA Executive Director, distributed copies of the ANCA 2006 Program Highlights to the Board. She provided an overview of ANCA’s 2006 programming and plans for 2007 to build upon the Board of Directors’ Strategic Plan in the areas of Enterprise and Economic Development, Quality of Life, Culture and Tourism, Working Landscapes, Capacity Development and Regions and Subregions.
Following the Board of Directors’ meeting and a noon luncheon, ANCA presented an afternoon forum entitled Change by Design: Future Visions for the North Country – A discussion of Survey Research and Findings. The survey research and findings discussion began at 1:00 pm and was attended by more than 75 people. The afternoon speakers included Jon Erickson of the University of Vermont, Annie Woods of the Adirondack Ecological Center, Graham Cox of the University of Vermont, William Porter of SUNY-ESF and Tim Holmes of Holmes and Associates. The presenters provided an overview of pilot research with 220 participants in fifteen group discussions and four focus groups that engaged residents and leaders from throughout the Adirondack North Country Region and Northern Forest states. They outlined how the research provided a "bottom-up perspective" for planning to address regional economic, community development and environmental concerns. During the session ANCA’s guests and directors recognized the value of the early research and commented that the survey should be expanded to include broader representation and involvement throughout the North Country and Northern Forest region.
P.S. In early February 2007, ANCA provided a support letter to Kate Baldwin at The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources for a project preproposal submitted by Graham Cox representing the interests of the University of Vermont, the SUNY_ESF’s Adirondack Ecological Center and Holmes and Associates. The preproposal application represents our combined interests in expanding the early research to a larger audience to include a survey questionnaire and telephone interviews of 1,200 people.
