Scenic Byways and Touring Routes Project History Fifty Years: 1954 to 2004 1964-1985 ANCA creates and distributes a highway touring guide, “Off the Beaten Path: Scenic Roads in the Adirondack Park Area.” 1986 First Adirondack North Country Regional Map of the Scenic Auto Trail System Prepared in partnership with the New York State Department of Transportation and the Adirondack Park Agency. 1989-1990 Adirondack North Country Regional Map-Byway Scenic Driving Tours (2nd ed.) $73,000 in funding provided by New York State and the Niagara Mohawk Foundation 1996-1997 Interactive Kiosk at Crown Point ~Developed and installed kiosk for the gateway Information Center at the Crown Point Bridge in Essex County. ~$15,000 in funding provided by NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 1993-1998 Tourist Information Development Byways: Scenic Driving Tours of the Adirondack North Country Tabloid ~Printed 50,000 copies of the Scenic Byways touring tabloid. Included detailed maps and narratives of eleven driving routes highlighting special Byway sites and attractions Interactive Kiosks ~Developed and installed five interactive kiosks at the following locations: Remington Museum in Ogdensburg, Salmon River Visitor Center in Oswego*, Union Depot in Saranac Lake*, Saratoga Battlefield in Stillwater, and the Adirondack Gateway on Route 12/28 in Barneveld. (* indicates kiosks sponsored by the Niagara Mohawk Foundation) Marketing ~ Inventoried the Olympic, Lake George-Lake Placid, Olympic and Revolutionary Trails as part of a marketing plan. $75,000 in funding through by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byways Program 1994-1995 Bicycle Master Plan for the Adirondack North Country Region of New York State ~Developed a regional bicycle plan that demonstrated the community benefits and economic values of local bicycling planning and outlined the necessary steps to create bicycle friendly communities. Reprinted in 1996. ~$35,000 in funding through by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byways Program 1997-1999 Bikeways of the Adirondack North Country Maps ~Developed an integrated bicycling and touring network. Published 25,000 copies of the map. ~$28,000 in funding provided by NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 1999-2000 “Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways: Development of a Model Video Highlighting the 11 Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways” ~The Adirondacks and the 1000 Islands Seaway Region were featured in the video distributed to tour bus operators and tourism industry representatives. ~$60,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program and the I Love New York Program 1999-2000 Adirondack North Country Regional Map (3rd ed.) ~Printed and distributed third of the eleven Scenic Byways – 100,000 copies and developed a bilingual French/English Highway touring map of the Adirondack North Country Byways – 50,000 copies ~$46,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program and International Paper 2000 “Merging Scenic Byways With Your Communities” Two Day Training Conference $10,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2000-2004 Tupper Lake Integrated Bicycling and Pedestrian Touring Network ~ Developed several pathways for pedestrians and recreational road and mountain bicyclers within the community creating an integrated touring network with connections to the crossroad Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byways. ~ Designed and printed 25,000 maps to promote and interpret the recreational trails and developed accompanying signage. ~ $28,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2001- 2004 Implementation of Celebration Champlain Strategic Plan developed and prepared market research and developed name, logo and tagline $189,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program Champlain Trail Scenic Byway Celebration Champlain Marketing Plan $48,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program Champlain Canal Byway Component to Celebration Champlain Marketing Plan Additional $14,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2002 Travel NYS Scenic Byways in the Fall: Fall Foliage Marketing Campaign ~ Worked in partnership with the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council on a combined television, print, and electronic marketing campaign to promote the fall foliage on NYS and its Scenic Byways--featured Tom Bodett as spokesperson. ~ Included the creation and distribution of glossy, thirty-page New York State Scenic Byways Guides “a-la-carte” edition. $1million in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2002-2003 Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways: Marketing Initiative Project ~ Worked in partnership with the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council on a combined map and marketing project. ~MAP: Printed and distributed fourth Adirondack North Country Regional Map of Scenic Byways of the of the Adirondack North County: Road Less Traveled (New Digitalized Edition) ~MARKETING: Worked in partnership with the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council on a combined print, television and web-based marketing campaign with call in number and fulfillment strategy. Included the creation and distribution of a thirty-eight page, glossy Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways Guide --“Speak Softly” edition. ~ $409,060 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program Funding with additional support from International Paper Corporation. 2002-2004 Develop Two Corridor Management/Marketing Plans for the Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway (188-miles) and the Olympic Scenic Byway (170-miles) ~ Created plans to promote tourism and stimulate economic development across a nine county region. ~ Prepared an inventory of the Byway corridors’ hundreds of historical, recreational, cultural, and natural resources with accompanying interpretive, stewardship, and marketing plans. ~ Addressed transportation, recreation, community design, and safety issues and opportunities. ~ $320,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2002-2004 Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway Interpretive Boardwalk Project ~ Construct boardwalk, parking lot, design and install signs and kiosk. Partnership effort with the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, Village of Tupper Lake, and Town of Altamont—recently renamed Town of Tupper Lake. ~ $84,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2002-2005 Develop Corridor Management/Marketing Plans for the 140-mile Central Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byway ~ Create plans to promote tourism, stimulate economic development and inventory corridor resources with focus on transportation and recreation issues and opportunities. ~ $110,800 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2003-2005 Establish Signing Criteria for NYS Scenic Byways ~ Worked in partnership with the NYS Department of Transportation, The Saratoga Associates, and Wilbur Smith Associates to design guidelines for a portfolio of byway signage needs to address community and directional needs. A manual and prototype signage is being developed. ~ $240,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2004-2005 Advanced Regional Marketing Project for the Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byways ~ Will develop marketing and interpretive materials for the two Byways and other Byways in the North Country. ~ $160,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2004-2005 Adirondack Regional Marketing Project ~ MAP: Print and distribute fifth Adirondack North Country Regional Map (Digitalized Edition) of Scenic Byways of the of the Adirondack North County ~ MARKETING: Campaign includes new travel guide to 13 Byways, print and television advertising with call center and fulfillment strategy, and web-site interface. ~ $442,000 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2004-2005 Adirondack Byways Invasive Plants Project ~ Project establishes a model rapid detection and response system to control invasive species along the Olympic Byway and document their location on the connecting Adirondack Byway. ~ Partnership effort includes NYSDOT, Nature Conservancy, and the Adirondack Park Agency. ~ $99,925 in funding provided by TEA-21 through NYSDOT’s Scenic Byway Program 2005-2006 Develop Black River Trail Scenic Byway Corridor Management/Marketing Plan (111 miles) ~ Create a comprehensive plan to promote tourism and stimulate economic development including an inventory of corridor resources.
