The Mobile Processing Unit has arrived! July 23, 2004 - A few weeks ago, ANCA received a call from the Central NY RC&D in Norwich NY. The Central NY RC&D worked with Heifer International seven years ago to fund a mobile processing unit for their pastured poultry producers. The RC&D was ready to sell the mobile processing unit this spring and called to ask if our group would be interested. Calls were quickly made to members of the group for their opinion and they decided to move on it. Charlie Grogan and Ben Schrader bought the MPU from Central NY RC&D for their personal use and the use of the group. This is the first MPU to be farmer-owned in New York State. The MPU consists of kill cones, a scalder, a plucker, eviscerating tables and chill tanks. There is a 110-volt electric hook-up, a water hook-up and propane tanks for the scalder, all located on a 25-foot long trailer. So, group members interested in using the MPU need to meet on July 27th, at the NCCC Campus in Malone in the loft at 7 pm. Please RSVP to me by July 23rd - Martha Pickard ANCA office 891-6200.
The only farmer owned poultry mobile processing unit in NYS on display at Ag Expo in Malone. |
