July 15th Processing Day

Brian and Ann Bennett have invited anyone interested in processing with them to join them on July 15th after 9am. The Bennetts live in Heuvelton.

Take Rt. 11 through Canton; in Canton get on Rt. 68N to the flashing light in Flackville. At the flashing light, take a left to the village of Heuvelton. In Heuvelton take a left over the bridge and then a right onto 184 and the Bennett’s farm is 7 ½ miles down that road. You will see their greenhouses and they have no neighbors. Please RSVP to me, Martha Pickard ANCA office (518) 891-6200, by July 8th and let me know if there is an interest in carpooling from Malone. Heifer International Visit

Aley Kent from Heifer International visited the group on Thursday, June 10th at the NCCC Campus in Malone. The group was a little hesitant at the amount of colored markers and paper provided and the maroon sticky board at the front of the room. As the group got into discussion on their values and visions for the future, ideas flew around the room and landed on the sticky board.

Following is a summary of the group’s goals and visions for the future.

Group Values:

1. Self Sufficiency
2. The farm is a place to grow a family
3. Building a farming community
4. Learning and sharing ideas
5. Sustainable, holistic approach in the process of creation

Group Vision:

1. Secure abundant food supply
2. Ecologically sound, diverse, thriving farms.
3. Educating the customer
4. Farmer controlled leadership
5. Supportive outreach network
6. Dynamic and fluid farms

The next meeting will be held in the fall when Aley will return to discuss how to put our goals and values into action.

I am going to start posting articles, pictures and news from my travels on ANCA’s website. I will post my most recent pictures of Windhaven Farms in Oneida County owned and operated by Keith and Margaret Morgan-Davies. The Morgan- Davies came to speak about their farm at our January meeting. I will post pictures of their homemade processing unit and homemade pens.

So check it out at www.adirondack.org.

Workshop Idea?

What do people think about holding a workshop on how to make your own homemade plucker and scalder this winter?

News from the Farms

Nancy Lynch and Bill Quinnell had a homemade plucker made for them and are looking forward to easier processing this year.

Charlie Grogan got his first batch of chicks and turkey poults and appears to be really enjoying himself.

Frank and Carolyn Hess just moved to Moira from Connecticut and are busy putting in their market garden and should be receiving their first batch of chicks soon.

Ken Whyte, a founding father of pastured poultry, just moved here from Norwich, NY and is starting a diversified dairy. Ken worked with the group in Central NY that first partnered with Heifer International for a mobile processing unit.

ANCA Farm Tour for British Visitor

On Wednesday, May 26, Martha Pickard, ANCA’s Grazing Technician, organized a tour of Ben Schrader’s farm in North Bangor for ANCA Director, Don Caldera and his brother-in-law, Terry Draycott. Mr. Schrader is raising grass-fed beef and currently expanding and diversifying his operation.

Mr. Draycott, of Coventry and Warwickshire, England, has been involved with efforts to aid farmers for the past three years. He helped set up the Rural Recovery Fund in the wake of the foot and mouth epidemic of 2001. A long time farmer himself, Mr. Draycott now advises farmers on ways to diversify and improve their farm business operations through Business Link, a not-for-profit organization based in England.

During the luncheon hosted by Mr. Caldera at Sweet Pea’s Steakhouse following the farm tour, Mr. Draycott commented to Ben Schrader and Roger Preve that, “You have an enormous resource in forage" in reference to Schrader’s beef operation and Preve’s dairy.

Also attending the luncheon were ANCA director John Kiechle, Bernadette Logozar of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Franklin County, and Joe Moreng, a representative from Colorado Agriculture.
