Regional Assessment of Adirondack Park Communities to Begin November 27, 2007 - The LA Group, a Saratoga Springs-based community and regional planning firm will be the lead consultant for the Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Project. The study will look at all 103 towns and villages located wholly or partially within the Adirondack Park to establish a fact-based assessment of municipal infrastructure and the life in each community. It will be the first-ever examination of all municipalities in the Adirondack Park, and is intended to provide important information to support Park-wide economic development planning. The Rochester-based Center for Governmental Research and Siena College’s Siena Research Institute will assist the LA Group as part of the research team. The study, a partnership effort of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV), and the Towns of Arietta and Chester, is funded by the New York State Department of State under the Quality Communities Grant Program. Terry Martino, Executive Director of ANCA, termed the project "An extremely important venture that will benefit every Adirondack community individually and together for years to come. It will help improve the quality of life in Adirondack communities over the long-term to sustain populated, vibrant, economically viable communities," she said. Likewise, J.R. Risley, current President of AATV, believes that all the communities of the Park will want to participate fully in the survey once they see how it can help local government. "This partnership effort represents a new approach to solving long-standing development problems in the Adirondacks," he said, "while protecting the resources and qualities making the Park a great place to live." Brad Dake, Chairman of the steering committee overseeing the study, confirmed that "the assessment could provide important factual information that will help to advance the economic and community development prospects for the entire Adirondack Park." The assessment project will begin with a series of regional meetings throughout the Park shortly after the New Year. These meetings will help explain the effort and gather input for a comprehensive survey to follow. The consultants will assemble detailed information from public records as well as through the survey on infrastructure, community life, education, recreation, land use and ownership, and general government. All the compiled information ultimately will be made available to every community in computerized form. The completion date for the assessment project is expected to be late summer, 2008. Contact Terry Martino for more information about the project, or visit AATV for regular status updates. Headquartered in Saranac Lake, New York, the Adirondack North Country Association is committed to economically viable communities and an improved rural quality of life.
