The Rebuilding of the Farming Community Forum:
An Overview of Heifer Project International
May 17, 2007
12:00 noon – 3:00 pm
at The Lodge at Lake Clear
Route 30—The Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway
Lake Clear, New York

Join the ANCA Board, staff and members at the Farm to Table Luncheon where you can experience the taste of local food products. Enjoy a lively interaction with regional producers at the luncheon tables and contribute to their commentary about food production during the afternoon forum. The Rebuilding of the Farming Community Forum: An Overview of Heifer Project International will feature commentary from Martha Pickard, ANCA Grazing Program Coordinator and Aley Kent, Field Coordinator from the Northeast Program Office of Heifer Project International. Ms. Pickard will discuss the importance of ANCA’s role in the creation of active farm-to-farm support networks throughout Adirondack North Country communities. Ms. Kent will discuss ANCA’s partnership with Heifer, the formation of the New York Farmer’s Partnership, and Heifer’s goals for agriculture in the North Country. During the forum Heifer project members will share their challenges and visions for North Country agriculture and their involvement in food production.

At the luncheon you will enjoy an assortment of local foods prepared by the The Lodge with grass-fed lamb from Shady Hill Farm in Dickinson Center, Tucker “taters” from Gabriels, farm eggs, North Country greens and local cheeses from grass-fed cows. Cathy Hohmeyer, co-owner and chef of The Lodge at Lake Clear www.lodgeonlakeclear.com, will provide opening remarks and commentary about the food preparation. Ms. Hohmeyer will discuss the goals of The Lodge, which offers four generations of Old World and Adirondack culinary traditions, with plans to offer a monthly dinner showcasing local foods.

Reservations are required and seating is limited to the first sixty-five guests, so please call ANCA by May 10, 2007 to reserve a seat for the May 17 meeting. There is a $15.00 fee and reservations can be made by calling ANCA at 518-891-6200.

ANCA is presently managing a three-year $94,250 contract with Heifer Project International to encourage farmer-to-farmer networks, farmer-to-community connections and improved farming practices. Through their work the Northern New York Farmer’s Partnership has formed a network of 35 producers of grass-fed meats and dairy products that are becoming increasingly popular as featured in the New York Times and Times magazine. The program and network have been instrumental in the revitalization and creation of support networks for grass-based farming partnerships. ANCA believes the network is crucial for viable local farms and an important solution in addressing regional agriculture development. The Heifer Project has complemented ANCA’s longstanding partnership with the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI), USDA and Natural Resource Conservation District which has enabled ANCA to provide technical assistance and planning services to producers.

The noon luncheon and presentation will follow an ANCA Board of Directors’ meeting scheduled between 10:00 am and noon.

The Adirondack North Country Association is committed to economically viable communities and a rural quality of life. For more information about ANCA, visit www.adirondack.org.
