Scenic Byway Community Marketing

Saranac Lake, NY - The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has entered into contract with the New York State Department of Transportation to develop a Regional Marketing Project for the Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byways. The project will build upon recommendations made through community outreach and planning discussions in the preparation of the NYS Corridor Management Plans that were completed in 2005. Both routes were officially designated as New York State Scenic Byways in 1992. At this time, ANCA is receiving proposals from qualified organizations and businesses interested in facilitating community exchange meetings and work sessions with stakeholders who participated in the corridor planning work.

Input will be collected from across Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Fulton, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Jefferson and Montgomery counties for ANCA’s upcoming byway print and website marketing projects. Discussions will include the organization of community input for three marketing projects:
  • Adirondack Trail marketing brochure
  • North Country Region cultural touring brochure--the “Arts, Crafts, and Foods Along the Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country”
  • Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways Website
Interested participants will learn the benefits of the Scenic Byway program and gain an understanding of how it positively impacts each community. The project will empower byway community stakeholders in cities, towns and villages to become self-starters for initiating local marketing and interpretive projects. Byway stakeholders will have an opportunity to learn how to make branding work for them in promoting their communities and interpreting their natural, historical, cultural, and recreational resources. They will become familiar with strategies and best practices for using their byway label/status effectively to stimulate tourism.

During the marketing initiative, the facilitator will work closely with ANCA staff to ensure linkages to the larger region wide promotional and interpretive goals of the Adirondack Trail and Olympic Scenic Byways. ANCA anticipates there will be a total of eight facilitated discussions at locations across the two byways. The goal of the meetings will be to build consensus with community members and byway stakeholders about the direction ANCA will undertake in promoting and interpreting the two routes in print and website marketing inclusive of discussions on how to use interpretive signage. The community exchange meetings will encourage local representatives to enter into regional project discussions, learn about other initiatives, and form partnerships for future byway work.
