NYS Budgets $300,000 for ANCA
June 13, 2006

Saranac Lake—The Board of Directors of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) is pleased to announce that $300,000 was secured in the 2006-07 state budget with the assistance of Senator Betty Little.

The funding will be used to support ANCA’s regional program work, including implementing objectives identified in ANCA’s Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 that was adopted at a March 16, 2006 Board of Directors’ meeting.

“We are very appreciative of Senator Little’s efforts and the leadership she brought to working with Senator Meier, Senator Wright and Senator Bruno to secure this funding for our efforts,” Ron Ofner, ANCA President stated. “I speak for our entire Board in thanking Senator Little, Senator Wright, Senator Meier and Senator Bruno for their commitment to our organization and the Adirondack North Country region.”

“I’m pleased to have helped secure this funding to support ANCA,” said Little. “Our rural Adirondack communities face challenges unique to the rest of the state. Because ANCA includes representation from 14 counties, they’re able to offer a broad, regional perspective. They’ve been an effective partner with many of our local organizations, businesses and municipalities, providing professional guidance and assistance. Their new strategic plan reaffirms ANCA’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents in northern New York.”

“The funding will enable us to address regional issues and opportunities the Board identified in the strategic plan and allow ANCA to continue its role as an advocate and provider of community-based services and programs,” Terry Martino, ANCA Executive Director commented. “Our ability to provide services in areas such as the Adirondack On-Track partnership, community development, broadband initiatives, and tourism planning will be greatly enhanced by the funding support. Senator Little is to be commended for her recognition that our communities can be best served by additional planning resources from ANCA that will have direct benefits to the organizations, communities, local governments and businesses with which we will continue to partner.”

Based on the Strategic Plan the renewed funding will be targeted to six broad focus areas including Enterprise and Economic Development; Quality of Life; Culture and Tourism; Working Landscapes; Capacity Development; and Regions and Subregions. ANCA’s emphasis will be to deliver services and programs that meet the needs of residents, businesses and communities with direct application to community planning and an improved economic climate.

ANCA’s Board of Directors has representation from throughout the fourteen-county North Country including Washington, Warren, Saratoga, Fulton, Oswego, Hamilton, Herkimer, Oneida, Jefferson, Lewis, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, and St. Lawrence counties. ANCA’s Board includes members from the public and private sectors.

The Adirondack North Country Association is committed to economically viable communities and an improved rural quality of life. ANCA is headquartered at 28 St. Bernard Street in Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
