ANCA Supports On Track Partnership

May 22, 2006

The Honorable George E. Pataki
Governor
Executive Chambers
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224

Dear Governor Pataki:

I am writing on behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the Adirondack North Country Association to express our appreciation for your strong support for the preservation and revitalization of the Adirondack Rail Corridor. Your past commitments have resulted in tremendous benefits to our communities and visitors based on the reactivation of rail service from Utica to Thendara and from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake.

At this time, we believe a top priority is to make a connection to Tupper Lake to ensure service between the Tri-Lakes communities of Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. We request your assistance in obtaining a commitment this year from the New York State Transportation Bond Act for $6.7 million in funds to rehabilitate the Saranac Lake-Tupper Lake segment. We believe this segment is a top regional priority because of its deteriorating condition.

We also request that funds be allocated to rehabilitate the remainder of the line from Tupper Lake south to Utica. The southern end of the line was intended as the first phase of the overall rehabilitation of the line. It is now imperative that the link to Tupper Lake be completed as soon as possible before deterioration threatens the future of the entire line, including the northern section.

As a member of the On-Track Partnership, ANCA believes the Adirondack Rail Corridor presents an important recreational and economic benefit to the region’s communities, villages and towns. The completed rehabilitation, revitalization and use of the 119-mile Adirondack Rail Corridor from Utica to Lake Placid will be an important part of your legacy of commitment to the economic and environmental improvement of our Adirondack communities.

Sincerely,

Terry Martino
Executive Director
