Town of Franklin Facility Development becomes New York Demonstration Site for Green Community Technologies Service

May 5, 2006 - Under the leadership of Mary Ellen Keith, Supervisor of the Town of Franklin, the Town Board of Franklin, and the Adirondack North Country Association, Inc., the Franklin Facilities Development Project becomes the first New York Demonstration Site for the Green Community TechnologiesSM service. Franklin joins the ranks of Barnstable County and Richmond, Massachusetts; Hancock, New Hampshire; Hinesburg and Thetford, Vermont; Litchfield, Maine; and Milford, Connecticut as members of the Green Community TechnologiesSM learning cohort. These eight governments are working with Yellow Wood Associates to better manage their assets, save tax dollars and green up their capital assets. Outcomes of these projects are many and varied and include for example, alternative wastewater treatment options, GASB 34 compliance, and green building design.

“We are very enthusiastic about the service and setting an example for other communities in New York State,” stated Mary Ellen Keith, Franklin Town Supervisor. “This is the first time we will undertake a comprehensive evaluation of our buildings and these facilities house activities that are the main service we offer to our taxpayers. Growing fuel and electricity costs, accessibility for everyone, and court mandates are all town concerns. Yellow Wood Associates will bring this all together for the town and provide a set of recommendations for us to consider.”

“The Adirondack North Country Association has been pleased to assist the Town of Franklin in their decision to work with Yellow Wood Associates to address the facility needs of the town,” Terry Martino, ANCA Executive Director, said. “The Town’s participation as a model project in New York for the Green Community Technologies service will provide an important blueprint for action that will result in cost savings in the short and long term and information that will be of benefit to other New York municipalities. We are delighted with the Town of Franklin’s commitment to the conservation and economic benefits of the program and the value that will extend to the Town’s residents.”

Yellow Wood Associates (Yellow Wood) has developed a process for helping rural municipalities inventory their assets and assess the potential for applying sound alternative technologies to those assets. This process has been underwritten by the United States Department of Agriculture Small Business Innovation Research Grant Program. Through Green Community TechnologiesSM, Yellow Wood takes a systems approach to cataloging a municipality’s infrastructure assets and then helps decision-makers find sustainable solutions for their most pressing needs. Yellow Wood Associates works with technologists and researchers around the world to provide an objective assessment of the full range of alternative solutions to infrastructure problems.

Local governments are constantly repairing, replacing and upgrading their infrastructure assets. The choices they make have an enormous impact on the environment and on local economic development. If we are to move toward more sustainable communities, local governments must choose more energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. Even though there are many proven alternative technologies that can help communities deal with their pressing infrastructure needs in sustainable and environmentally responsible ways, how do local officials go about the process of responsibly considering these new green technologies?

Green Community TechnologiesSM is a win-win process for local communities and for the agencies and organizations pushing for sustainability. Find out how Green Community TechnologiesSM can help your town save money on their infrastructure investments while doing the right thing for the environment.
