Cover of the Guidebook Handmade in the Forest Forest: A guide to fine art and craft tradtions in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York

March 30, 2006 - As a grand finale to the popular HandMade in the Northern Forest heritage arts and crafts exhibit currently on display at the Saranac Lake Free Library, an art show reception and book release party will be held in the library’s Cantwell Community Room on April 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. The public, and especially collectors of handmade and regionally made items, is invited to attend. Artists who have participated in the exhibit will be available to discuss their work during the celebration, which will include music, refreshments and the opportunity for attendees to be among the first in the region to purchase HandMade in the Northern Forest: A guide to fine art and craft traditions in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. The reception is sponsored by the Adirondack North Country Association and the Northern Forest Center.

Scheduled for wide release this spring, HandMade in the Northern Forest offers 13 regional driving tours that include more than 365 Northern Forest businesses, including studios, galleries and guilds, restaurants and inns, and special attractions such as museums, historical sites and working farms. In addition to detailed contact information for each listing—as well as descriptions of what each has to offer—every chapter provides colorful maps and local lore about the tour areas.

Many of the studios, galleries and guilds, restaurants and inns, museums, historical sites and working farms in the “High Peaks Lakes Driving Tour” chapter of HandMade in the Northern Forest have pieces on exhibit at the in the Saranac Lake Free Library. The “High Peaks Lakes Driving Tour” is one of five tours in the book, with a total of 85 participants, situated in the Adirondack North Country region.

The exhibit was spearheaded by Adirondack North Country Association’s Nadia Korths, ANCA's Crafts Program Coordinator and a member of HandMade in the Northern Forest’s steering committee. Korths stated, 'This exhibit represents the best of the region and establishes important linkages in the guidebook for businesses across the Northern Forest."

Published by the Northern Forest Center and Businesses for the Northern Forest, HandMade in the Northern Forest retails for $19.95. Once released, it will be available from businesses listed in the book, bookstores and via the web. More information is available at www.HandMadeInTheNorthernForest.com.

Active in the region since 1954, the Adirondack North Country Association is committed to economically viable communities and an improved rural quality of life. ANCA managed RBEG funding from the USDA for the project. For more information about ANCA visit www.adirondack.org.

The Northern Forest Center was founded in 1997 to mobilize people to build healthy communities, economies and ecosystems by working together across the Northern Forest region. Since then, the Center has conducted research, produced publications, developed programs and convened dialogue and regional exchanges on issues ranging from heritage and culture to economic development, conservation and place-based education.

The purpose of Businesses for the Northern Forest is to strengthen long-term business opportunities in the Northern Forest by helping businesses work together to improve the financial, social and environmental well being of the region.
