ANCA Celebration of the Opening of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail And The Presentation of Map 2 Long Lake to Saranac Lake, New York

The Adirondack North Country Association will celebrate the opening of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and Presentation of Map 2 Long Lake to Saranac Lake, NY on September 23, 2004 at the Hotel Saranac, Saranac Lake, NY.

The celebration will follow the ANCA Board meeting that will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a Noon luncheon. The public meeting will begin at 1:00 PM and will celebrate the success of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail in planning for the Long Lake to Saranac Lake, New York segment of the historic 740-mile waterway that extends from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine. The program will highlight the progress ANCA and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail Committee have made together since the initial presentation to the ANCA Board and membership at ANCA’s Annual Meeting in November of 2002 and the next steps.

The meeting follows the September 9, 2004 dedication of the western terminus of the Trail in Old Forge, New York hosted by the Central Adirondack Association. The second length of the Trail from Long Lake to Saranac Lake and the presentation of Map 2 provides paddling enthusiasts with the necessary information to tour this New York section of the route.

The September 23 meeting will feature a presentation by Rob Center, the Founding Director of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and their Executive Director Kate Williams. Commentary will also be provided by the volunteer coordinator, Charlie Wilson, and Nick and Lisa Dyslin who have been leaders in the planning effort. Lisa Lyons, Community Outreach Planner, representing the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, will highlight her involvement with the initiative. Debbie McDonnell from the Saranac Lake Community Development office will provide a local perspective on the benefits of the Trail.

The public is invited to any or all sessions.

The Board of Directors business meeting beginning at 10:00 AM, comprises financial reports, program highlights and nominations to the Board.

A reservation for the Noon luncheon is required by September 20. There is a $15 fee.

Reservations may be made by contacting ANCA at 518-891-6200 or email at anca@northnet.org.
