Preparation of Regional Plan for Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway Begins

Beginning in the summer of 2004, the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) will be meeting with Local Action Committees in towns and villages along the Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway to create a Corridor Management/Marketing Plan. ANCA has contracted with the New York State Department of Transportation to work with local governments, business owners, civic groups, agencies and other interested stakeholders in the preparation of a regional plan. The plan will address the future of the travel route from Rome to Glens Falls, which was officially designated as part of the New York State Byway System by the Legislature in 1992.

Presently, ANCA is seeking requests for proposals from applicants interested in serving as project facilitators to oversee local planning efforts and to create local segment plans. In order to promote the area and stimulate economic development and tourism, the CMP will integrate all local input detailing the vision, goals, objectives, actions and recommendations. Stewardship and enhancement of the corridor’s intrinsic qualities will also be addressed.

Through a competitive application process, ANCA will select several local facilitators to partner with ANCA to coordinate the CMP project planning and development for specific segments of the Byway. Facilitators will work directly with ANCA and have outreach and coordination with community representatives from the Byway area in order to build local ownership and commitment to both the planning and eventual implementation of the plan.

Those interested in learning more about this regional planning initiative should contact ANCA at (518) 891-6200. It is expected that the planning work will commence in early June and will be completed by October/November 2005. Project funding will be provided by a grant to the New York State Scenic Byways Program through the Federal Highway Administration Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century of 1998.
