Regions and Subregions - Current ProgramsThe Adirondack North Country Association has worked on a variety of projects that span the Northern Forest region of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. In 2004, ANCA's Executive Director, Terry Martino, was appointed as a member to the Northern Forest Lands Council 10th Anniversary Forum. The Final Report: Recommendations for the Conservation of the Northern Forest was released by the North East State Foresters Association (NEFA) in 2005. Endorsed by the four governors of the Northern Forest states, the report provides four recommendations calling for increased public and private investment for community and economic development planning; continuation of investment in conservation and stewardship; support of private landowners, and creation of a regional collaborative effort to support implementation throughout the region. The Final Report can be viewed at www.nefainfo.org. In addition to ANCA's work with NEFA, ANCA has maintained a longstanding regional partnership with the Northern Forest Center, headquartered in Concord, New Hampshire. ANCA's work with the Center has included staff support to their Wealth Index Project, sponsorship of three Leadership Exchanges, and involvement in their regional policy discussions including visits to Washington D.C. Since the early nineties, ANCA has worked strategically in the development of a Northern Forest Regional Strategy. In addition, ANCA partnered with the Northern Forest Center on the Handmade in the Northern Forest: A Guide to Fine Art and Craft Traditions in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. ANCA was successful in securing USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant funding toward the work. The 250 page publication is a full-color guidebook with 13 driving tours and more than 325 listings, including studios, galleries and guilds, restaurants and inns, and special attractions such as museums, historical sites and working farms. Every chapter includes colorful maps, local lore, and detailed contact information for each listing. The four-state Steering Committee included Nadia Korths, ANCA Craft Programs Coordinator. The committee began the work of creating the guidebook in 2001 with publication and distribution in 2006. Another regional project, includes ANCA's work with the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. ANCA hosted two committees in New York in support of the development of mapping and interpretive information from Long Lake to Saranac Lake and from Saranac Lake to Plattsburgh. The Canoe Trail is a 740-historic waterway connecting Old Forge, New York to Port Kent, Maine and is a highly visible project across the four Northern Forest states.
