ANCA Presents at the Adirondack Park Agency Director’s Meeting On November 2, 2005 Terry Martino, ANCA’s Executive Director and Board Members made a short presentation to the Directors of several State agencies including the Adirondack Park Agency, Department of Environmental Conservation, and Regions One, Two and Seven of the NYS Department of Transportation, and State Scenic Advisory Board staff. The presentation followed ANCA’s summer 2005 resolution requesting that DOT make necessary roadway improvements to Route 28, the Central Adirondack Byway. ANCA staff and directors discussed ANCA's history with touring routes and partnership with NYSDOT following the 1991 ISTEA legislation and the 1992 statewide recognition of New York State byways. In that ANCA believes the roadway conditions of the byways are an important component for safety, tourism, and economic development, they asked the Regional NYSDOT Directors how they could coordinate their work to partner with the agency to ensure communications with their local communities. ANCA questioned what steps NYSDOT can take to ensure that we can know about public meetings/hearings and road construction projects on the byways. As the byway management entity for the Adirondack Trail, the Central Adirondack Trail and the Olympic Scenic Byways, ANCA also asked how we could network information about what projects and where on the byways so we can go out early and get community input. ANCA looks to continue a longstanding partnership with NYSDOT by helping facilitate local communication. There will be a follow-up meeting in Albany with ANCA and DOT on March 27, 2006. New Opportunities for Byway Communities Community leaders are encouraged to review their Corridor Management Plan goals and consider applying for Department of State Waterfront planning grants. Many of the plan’s local and regional recommendations for action may qualify for funding under this program. Visit the website at www.nyswaterfronts.com/index.asp for additional details. Additional Quality Communities Funding Availability in 2006 The Department of State’s New York State Quality Communities Grant Program will be soliciting for applications soon. Eligible applicants include: Counties, Cities, Towns, Villages, Indian Tribes/Nations, Local Public Authorities, Public Benefit Corporations, and, in some cases Not-for-Profits. Keep checking the Quality Communities website for the new 2006 funding round at www.qualitycommunities.org/index.asp. Please contact ANCA if you need additional assistance with an application. Byway Logo Reminder The Byway name and logo may be used on Internet websites to mark yourself as a Byway community. Remember, many visitors develop their travel itineraries by visiting websites prior to their arrival in the area.
