Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway
One of 13 Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country
Visit the official Seaway Trail for more to see and do.
This 160 mile stretch of New York's 454-mile Seaway Trail
runs along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. It connects cities, quaint
villages, picturesque bays and rolling farmland. Travel themes include history, architecture, maritime heritage, lighthouses, agritourism, sportfishing, the Gilded Age and lots more!
If you begin your tour of the Seaway Trail on Route 37 in
Massena on the St. Lawrence River (northern end of Trail), you can enjoy the following sites and points of interest:
- Massena - Visit the Eisenhower Locks Observation Deck, the Robert Moses State Park,
and the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project Visitor Center. To get to the Robert Moses State Park you drive in a tunnel under the Seaway! The Military Trail ends here and the Seaway Trail begins here.
- Hogansburg - learn about the Mohawk Indian history at the
Akwesasne Museum and play your luck at the Mohawk Casino.
- Fort Covington - prohibition created some creative businesses.
- Ogdensburg - do not miss the Frederick Remington Art Museum
which showcases the illustrations, paintings and bronzes of one of the world's most famous artists. Ogdensburg is the only city in St. Lawrence County, the fifth largest county east of the Mississippi River! See historic buildings like the Robert C. McEwen Customs House, the oldest federal building in the USA. Take a walking tour of the War of 1812 sites.
- Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce - Hike and enjoy the programs at the Minna Common Nature
Center at Wellesley Island State Park. Do not miss a tour of the legendary Boldt Castle and Singer Castle;
both seemingly lifted from the pages of a Victorian novel.
- Clayton - visit some of the most unique museums in the
Thousand Islands located here: the Antique Boat Museum, and The Handweaving Museum & Arts Center. In the shops you'll find everything from prints to
pottery. Stop in a local restaurant and be sure to try authentic 1000 Island Dressing or a
crock of St. Lawrence River chowder.
- Cape Vincent - The Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is where Lake Ontario
meets the St. Lawrence River. Visit the Cape for its riverside camping and the annual French Festival. Take the Ferry to Canada, via Wolfe Island.
- Dexter - stop by the Stone Mills Northern New York
Agricultural Museum on Route 180. Some Town of Orleans history.
- Watertown - visit the Jefferson County Historical Museum, a
1876 Tuscan Villa with a walking/driving tour of the city’s historical architecture with 32 different buildings in four different areas within Watertown, population 30,000. With your children, take a trip to the Thompson Park Conservancy to see animals native to New York State, and the Sci-Tech Center, the only hands-on science museum in northern NY.
An upcoming white water kayakers' dream ride is the Black River Improvement Project. More attractions and events in and around Watertown. Close by is
Fort Drum, one of the largest military bases in the country.
- Sackets Harbor - learn about the village's critical role in
the War of 1812 at the Sackets Harbor State Historic Site. In the village visit the Augustus Sacket Mansion and the Madison Barracks, an early example of a designed military complex. There's the annual Sackets Harbor Jazz Festival, started in 2000, to enjoy. A nearby attraction for children is the Old McDonald's Farm.

- Henderson Harbor - be sure to look for historic buildings
dating to the early 1800s. Campers should be pleased to find the scenic Southwick Beach
State Park. Anglers will recognize Henderson Harbor as home of the PBS television series,
Rod and Reel. Pick berries inland in Adams Center and enjoy fresh Great Lakes Cheese in Adams.
- Sandy Creek - be sure to visit this cross-country skier's
heaven in the winter when you can enjoy the nearly 300 miles of groomed cross-country and
snowmobile trails in Winona Forest and the Osceola XC Ski Center. Visit the Oswego County Fair
- Pulaski - visit the Salmon River, famous for its salmon and
steelhead fishing. Explore the Great Salmon Wilderness, the southern entrance to the Tug Hill Region and the western entrance to the Adirondack North Country Region. . The dairy farming of this region makes for some great cheese and entertainment!
- Mexico - use the state boat launch to begin your
pursuit of Lake Ontario's trophy-sized salmon, lake trout, and walleye. Just before Port
Ontario look for the Selkirk Shores State Park and the Selkirk Lighthouse where the Salmon
River flows into Lake Ontario. Explore the town's history. Cyclists can pick up the Seaway Trail bike loop here.
- Oswego - tour the Erie Canal, Fort Lake Ontario, and the
Derby Hill Bird Observatory. There are many more attractions. The Harborfest party goes out with a bang every year with it's world famous Grucci fireworks. This awesome pyrotechnics display brings an estimated 200,000 spectators to the Port City. There are many more cultural happenings. If you are a scuba diver, be sure to check out the many
underwater shipwreck sites.
- Fair Haven - and its bay have have been famous as a resort since the first summer home, still standing, of the Cottage Farm built in 1835 by a wealthy NYC family. During the railroad boom, for a time, Fair Haven shipped more anthracite coal than Rochester or Big Sodus Bay. Do not miss the Sodus Bay Historical Lighthouse Museum or the Sterling Renaissance Festival each July and August.
