Military Trail Scenic Byway
One of 13 Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country
Map of Military Trail Scenic Byway
Peace prevails along the Military Byway nowadays. Once the transit route for colonial troops and supplies, bootleggers and Fenians, it is now a rural corridor that connects sites like the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project Visitor Center, the Almanzo Wilder (Farmer Boy) Homestead, Malone's challenging golf course and the Akwesasne Indian Reservation.
Between bites of history you can sample fresh produce at farm stands, see the 120-foot waterfalls at High Falls in Chateaugay, or throw the dice at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. You're sure to come up a winner on this byway:
- Rouses Point - look for the ruins of Fort Montgomery (not
open to the public) near the bridge to Vermont. Also known as "Fort Blunder,"
because after its construction in the 1800s it was discovered that the fort was actually
built on Canadian soil, its stones were used in building the bridge to Vermont.
South of Rouses Point six miles in Chazy is the Alice T. Miner Museum, open in 1924, with 15 rooms of period furniture and more.
- Ellenburgh - in 1880 this township had a population of 3,186.
- Chateaugay - be sure to visit the 120-foot waterfall at
High Falls Park and the McCadam Cheese Factory. The park features great fishing, a campground, hiking trails, and a
playground. The Gibson Brothers bluegrass band, from here, is playing at the Town Hall Theatre. Visit the Dick's Country Store and Music Oasis located in Churubusco, New York, only 4 miles from the birthplace of Orville Gibson. The Orville Gibson Music festival takes place in June. Just south of town
are the beautiful Chateaugay Lakes with many opportunities for water recreation. Look for
the state boat launch between the lakes on Route 374.
- Burke - tour the Wilder Farm Museum where husband of famous
Little House on the Prairie writer, Laura Ingalls grew up. Her book, Farmer Boy
, describes husband Almonzo Wilder's childhood on this North Country farmstead.
- Malone - This small city of 10,000 people has many architectural treasures including some Victorian Painted Ladies. Enjoy views of rolling farmlands and of the St. Lawrence River. Visit the Titus Mountain Ski Center. In the 1870 military invasion, Malone, Chateaugay, Fort Covington and Hogansburg were the principal places where arms were assembled.
- Hogansburg - learn about the Mohawk Indian history at the
Akwesasne Museum and play your luck at the Mohawk Casino.
- Fort Covington - prohibition created some creative businesses.
- Massena - Visit the Eisenhower Locks Observation Deck, the Robert Moses State Park,
and the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project Visitor Center. To get to the Robert Moses State Park you drive in a tunnel under the Seaway! The Military Trail ends here and the Seaway Trail begins.
