Lakes to Locks All-American Road

The hamlets and villages are famous for bed and breakfast inns and local restaurants operated by folks invested in their communities and your satisfaction. Back roads make for world class cyling. For touring suggestions visit Champlain Bikeways, Bike Adirondacks or call the Feeder Canal Alliance at 518 792-5363 for information about the Old Champlain Canal multi-use trail. The Lake Champlain Birding Trail is ranked by the Audubon Magazine as one of the nation's top six destinations for bird watching - so birding opportunities abound. Check out Lake Champlain Birding.
The 225-mile route connects Waterford to Rouses Point. Parallels the Hudson River, the Champlain Canal and Lake Champlain. If you begin your tour of the Lakes to Locks Passage on Route 9 in Rouses Point and head south to Chazy, you can enjoy the following sites and points of interest:
  • Chazy - view antique furnishings in the 1824 home of local philanthropists at the Alice Miner collection. 518-846-7336.
  • Plattsburgh - visit the Kent DeLord House Museum and stroll along the Saranac River on the Heritage Trail and Riverwalk. 518-561-1035.
  • Valcour Island - accessable only by boat, the island is the perfect place for a hike or picnic.
  • Port Kent - a port for the Lake Champlain Ferries to Vermont. For ferry schedule and fare information call 802-864-9804 or Lake Champlain Ferries
  • Ausable Chasm - like visitors since 1870, hike the trails deep into the crevices of the chasm and take a boat ride through a natural wonder. For more information on the Ausable Chasm call 518-834-7454.
  • Keesesville - see the country's largest single-span, stone arch bridge crossing the Ausable River here.
  • Willsboro - visit the 1812 Homestead and the fish ladder which allows upstream spawning of salmon.
  • Essex - do not miss this extraordinary example of Pre-Civil War village architecture and a port for the Lake Champlain Ferries to Vermont. For ferry schedule and fare information call 802-864-9804. Lake Champlain Ferries
  • Westport - tour the village, visit the Marina Country Club, and catch a summer evening performance at the Depot Theatre in the historic restored train station.
  • Port Henry - stop at a roadside billboard here to learn about the legend of "Champ," the giant sea serpent who resides in Lake Champlain.
  • Crown Point - Crown Point Visitor's Center. Plan to visit the Crown Point State Historic Site, the Penfield Mines, and the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse.
  • Ticonderoga - tour Fort Ticonderoga, a national historic landmark, Mount Defiance, the LaChute River, and the Boston Hancock House Mansion. Fort Ticonderoga. More info about area at Hague - Ticonderoga Info
  • Check out the bicycle routes along routes 4, 22, and 9. Champlain Bikeways
  • Whitehall
  • - visit the birthplace of the U.S. Navy and home of the Skenesborgh Museum.
  • Fort Edward - see the Old Fort House Museum, an outpost during the French and Indian War.
  • Champlain Canal - Historical trails, battlefields, bike trails, museums and plenty of small businesses dot the landscape between Waterford (Lock 1) and Whitehall (Lock 12) to interest and serve the vacationing family; by water or by land!
  • Washington County - This county of rolling hills and farmland parallels the Champlain Canal to the west.
