     Dude Ranch Trail Scenic Byway

Dude Ranch Trail Scenic Byway

One of 13 Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country

Horse lovers, adventure seekers, and families on vacation will find excitement on this 40-mile trail passing horse ranches, lakeside resort villages and theme parks. This loop begins and ends on Lake George. Start your journey in the popular resort Village of Lake George set at the southern tip of one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the Adirondacks. Before galloping off to dude ranch country, take a ride on the Comet roller coaster at the Great Escape amusement park or tour Lake George aboard the Minne-Ha-Ha, a turn-of-the century steamboat. Follow the trail out of the Village of Lake George along Route 9N and stop by the Roaring Brook Ranch just outside the village of Lake George. Then it's off to:
  • Warrensburg - visit the downtown section where you can experience the town's history while admiring the 19th century architecture. Warrensburg is known for its antique shops, meat markets, Echo Lake Public Beach, Hackensack Mountain, Warren County Nature Trails overlooking the Hudson River, Pack Forest Nature Center, Hickory Ski Center, Bandstand Concerts, Cronin's - one of the oldest golf courses in the country, the River Street Historic District, and Ridin' Hy, one of the dude ranches in this area with a rodeo (part of the Adirondack Championship Rodeo Circuit). In October, stop by the World's Largest Garage Sale or enjoy a bike loop anytime in the warm seasons.
  • Stony Creek - take a dip in the popular Old Swimmin' Hole or listen to music. Visit the Wilcox Lake Forest Area west of the village and the 1000 Acres Ranch Resort, set in a valley along a river.
  • Hadley - see the Conklingville Dam that controls the water flow from the Great Sacandaga Lake as it flows into the Hudson River. A four-mile round trip on an old fire tower road to the open summit of Hadley Mountain provides excellent views of the Great Sacandaga Reservoir and the peaks of the Southern Adirondacks.
  • Lake Luzerne - visit one or all of the several museums that chronicle the town's rich industrial heritage. Do not miss Rockwell Falls where the Hudson makes its last Adirondack splash as it flows south to the Atlantic Ocean. See a concert at the Luzerne Music Center, summer home for members of the Philadelphia and New York City symphonies. Painted Pony Rodeo. Bennett's Riding Stables also offers snowmobile rides during the winter. Just north of Lake Luzerne on the river is the Hudson River Recreation Area, with trails suitable for walkers and bikers of all ages and abilities from flat to hilly, continuing at times through dense forests, with one climbing to nearby ponds.
  • Follow Route 9N between Lake Luzerne and Lake George. Be sure to stop at the Adirondack Mountain Club's headquarters for hiking information.
  • Complete your journey with, just south of Lake George, the 5.5-mile Memorial Highway drive to the 2,030 foot summit of Prospect Mountain with views of the Adirondacks and
Lake George, the "Queen of the American Lakes."
