Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway
One of 13 Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country
Map of Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway
The history and folklore of the Central Adirondacks come alive in Old Forge during a 28-mile scenic cruise aboard a double-decker boat. Find sophisticated pleasures such as the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls - a highly regarded collection of European and American art. Enjoy diverse dining options and a wide variety of activities in Lake George, and scenic excursions on the Upper Hudson River Railroad from North Creek or on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad from Thendara. Step back in time at Fort Stanwix and Erie Canal Village in Rome.
If you begin your tour of the Central Adirondack Trail in the city of Rome and head north on Route 365, you
can enjoy the following sites and points of interest:
- Rome - do not miss Fort Stanwix nor the Erie Canal Village where in July 4, 1817, the first shovelful of earth was turned for the construction of the original Erie Canal.
To learn more about Rome, home of Revere Copper and Brass, and people such as Francis Bellamy who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance, visit the Rome Historical Society Museum and the Rome Art and Community Center. View some photos of Rome. Nearby is the Oneida Indian Nation. Also nearby is the Rome Sand Plains, a combination of high sand dunes and low peat bogs, making this area a rare natural feature.
- Remsen - visit the home of the Adirondack rail corridor.
See Welsh traditions at the Remsen Barn Festival in early September. Be sure to visit the
Steuben Memorial, the burial site and log cabin home of the Revolutionary War General who fought with General Washington at Valley Forge and authored the military 'Blue Book' still used today.
- Thendara - take the train ride on the restored
Scenic Adirondack Railroad. The train travels the same rails that carried some of the
area's first visitors, J.P. Morgan, the Whitney family, and Theodore Roosevelt. Play a round of golf on the 18 holes at the Thendara Golf Course.
- Old Forge - paddle the Fulton Chain of Lakes or, during the winter, snowmobile the deep lake-effect snows. Stop at the Webb Historical Association, and the Arts Center of Old Forge. Painters from across the nation compete to enter the Annual Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors in September.
Children can enjoy the biggest water park in New York State at the Enchanted Forest, a ride to the top of McCauley
Mountain, or a cruise on the original steamboat, the Clearwater.
- Inlet - Scenic plane rides are available in town which is also
an access point to the scenic Moose River Plains Wild Forest Area. Recreational
opportunities abound including hiking, picnicking, camping, and canoeing the Fulton Chain
of Lakes.
- Raquette Lake - Take a tour of the largest natural lake on the Raquette Lake Navigation Tour Boat and hear stories about some of the many camps seen on its 99 miles of shoreline. See the Pine Knot Camp and the Church of the Good Shepherd on St. Hubert's Isle which were some of the many structures built by William Durant, the architect of Camp Sagamore. Tour this camp, formerly the Vanderbuilt Estate, and now the only great camp open to the public on a regular basis.
- Blue Mountain Lake - visit the nationally recognized
Adirondack Museum, a must-see for anyone traveling the Central Adirondack Trail. Called
"...the best of its kind in the world" by The New York Times, the museum
features 22 buildings of displays on Adirondack history and art. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, just down the hill, across the road from the lake, has year round rotating exhibits of contemporary works. The reviews of The Hedges give a sense of the beauty and relaxation found in this area.
- Indian Lake - Come for the thrill of a rafting trip down the exciting Hudson River Gorge. Town of Indian Lake Museum has collection of local history and memorabilla, 518-648-5377. Dining in and around this village includes settings with breathtaking views and fine dining to the classic diner food to Mexican.
- North River - visit the home of the only open-pit mining
operation for garnets in the Adirondacks. At Barton Mines, visitors can view the entire
mining operation and explore mineral exhibits. North River, North Creek and Indian Lake also are known for the many companies which provide white water rafting from North River to Riparius, both below and above the Hudson River Gorge.
- North Creek - With Gore Mountain Ski Center open since the early 1900s, this village has a number of restaurants and shops to sample. The whole complex of the North Creek Depot Museum, consisting of the station, old station, freight house, round house, tool house, turntable and horse barn, is remarkably intact and provides an interesting record of railroad history dating back to 1874. At the Depot the Upper Hudson River Railroad offers a 2 hour scenic train ride along the Hudson River to the train station at Riverside and back. Richard Landon, a regional travel writer, writes about his train ride and museum visiting in Riding the Rails in North Creek.
- Warrensburg - visit the home of many antique shops and B&Bs. Warrensburg is the home of the Cronin's Golf Course where three generations of Cronin's have carefully maintained and upgraded the course since the 1945.
- Lake George - visit the village known as "The Gateway
to the Adirondacks" and the "Queen of American Lakes," Lake George itself, which extends for 32 miles into an area that is rich in history and beauty. The Lake George Historical Association & Museum and Fort William Henry Museum commemorate a site of many battles and lives lost in the French Indian Wars.
Fishing Lake George and taking the
Lake George Steamboat are only two of the many ways of exploring this Queen of American Lakes.
