2007 Program Highlights
Quality of Life
ANCA works to ensure that the most valuable resource of the region — its people — have the best possible quality of life for current residents and future generations by working on protecting the region’s rural character, advancing education into "life-long learning," creating affordable housing, sustaining the region’s health care services and access to health care, and achieving reliable and sustainable energy for the region. Highlights of the 2007 annual work activities are as follows:
- Staff participated in January 29, March 16, and May 15 discussions about the potential for the Adirondack Park as an Energy Smart Park where energy conservation and planning is promoted as a vital element of community and economic development. Staff assisted with preparation of a two-page summary document about the initiative.
- Staff attended an evening reception and two-day Energy Smart Park meeting that was hosted at Heaven Hill Farm by the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks on May 23 – 25. Staff provided follow-up in the review of communications and in hosting a follow-up meeting at ANCA on September 28. The goal of the meetings is to draft a blueprint for an Energy Smart Action Plan.
- ANCA continued administration of funding for the $200,000 New York State Housing grant that ANCA received in 2005 and is administering for the Village of Saranac Lake. Staff met with Debbie McDonnell to discuss her departure from the Village and the Village’s need to secure staff services to maintain the paperwork and project management of the housing funds that are being accessed by local businesses for façade improvements. Staff provided follow-up assistance to Camoin Associates in their work to coordinate contractual needs for the village on the project. Staff worked with Camoin Associates and the village in their determination to request a six-month project extension. ANCA continued to provide billing services to the Housing Department and payments to the Village for completed contractual work.
- ANCA staff participated in the Community Exchange Day in Jay on January 26 that addressed energy conservation and retrofitting of an existing structure.
- ANCA staff attended a May 3 luncheon sponsored by the Tri-Lakes Center for Independence with a presentation by the Society for Accessible Tourism and Hospitality. The discussion focused on the need to provide accommodations and accessibility in physical lodging, website development and transport to the 55 million Americans who make up the market of disabled and aging travelers. Projections indicated this is a vast market and that the accommodations are necessary to achieve quality of life standards for their travel
experience.
- ANCA staff attended a Health Care Summit on August 30 in Warren County and supported correspondence addressing the health care crisis in the North Country.
- ANCA staff attended an Adirondack Park Agency meeting on October 12 that addressed the health care crisis in the region.
