Capacity Development

ANCA, through appropriate resources and its partnership network, advances local government training and technical assistance, non-profit development and training and employment training to help meet the region’s needs. During 2006 ANCA provided the following services throughout the Adirondack North Country region:
  • Staff implemented proactive public communications about regional economic development initiatives, opportunities and issues through use of the internet, press releases and public forums.
  • Staff assisted in the review and ranking of the NYSDOT Region II Transportation Enhancement Program applications 2006. ANCA was invited to the table based on ANCA’s Byway work experience and NYSDOT’s interest in having an Adirondack perspective on the review team.
  • ANCA staff attended The Walkable Workshop on September 12, 2006 that was sponsored by the Tug Hill Commission featuring Mark Fenton of PBS Television’s America’s Walking. North Country leaders came together to discuss opportunities for a more friendly pedestrian environment. Topics such as a "walkability audit," financing of projects, and how towns and villages can work with NYSDOT were discussed.
  • ANCA’s Board of Directors adopted a Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 in March which identified six broad strategies for ANCA’s program development and services: Enterprise and Economic Development; Quality of Life; Culture and Tourism; Working Landscapes; Capacity Development and Regions and Subregions.
  • ANCA’s Board of Directors developed a Strategic Action Agenda in the summer which was distributed to the gubernatorial candidates Eliot Spitzer and John Faso and to Republican and Democratic party chairs throughout the fourteen counties. The Agenda presented the need a comprehensive approach to provide services and programs to improve community and economic development and quality of life throughout the North Country region.
  • ANCA staff worked with municipal and organizational leaders throughout the Adirondack Park in the development of a Blue Print for the Blue Line which forged a common ground alliance between economic and environmental interests in the Adirondack Park. ANCA offered teleconferencing linkages that enabled the group to build regional participation.
  • Staff made significant changes to ANCA’s website to present information about North Country businesses, ANCA’s programs, press releases and current news in an easily accessible format.
  • ANCA partnered with Comlinks in providing promotion, workshops and technical assistance services to the Women’s Business Entrepreneurial Center.
  • ANCA partnered with the Plattsburgh and Watertown SBDCs in presenting workshops.
  • ANCA partnered with the City of Oswego Community Development Office to present the Marketing Toolkit to downtown retailers in Oswego.
  • ANCA developed a partnership with Katy Curyn, Director of Retail and Market Access, WREN, New Hampshire to present a Marketing Toolkit workshop in Bethlehem, NH in March, 2006.
  • ANCA initiated email transmissions to planners, city/town/village government officials, tourism representatives, businesses, civic groups and organizations, and economic/community development organizations
  • ANCA assisted in the submission of project applications to NYSDOT on behalf of communities along the Olympic, Central Adirondack and Adirondack Byways.
  • ANCA provided sponsorship to Saranac Lake’s First Night, a new event planned for December 31, 2006 that will be a unique public event featuring musicians and performing artists.
