2005 Annual Report

Terry Martino, Executive Director, Adirondack North Country Association

A Message From ANCA's Executive Director

2005 was a strategic year for the Adirondack North Country Association. The Board of Directors initiated a comprehensive planning discussion at the Annual Meeting on November 17 at the Barbecue Pit in Lake Placid. Following ANCA's fiftieth anniversary in 2004, directors recognized it was important to update the plan that had been initially finalized as Boom 2000: Empowering the Adirondack North Country Economies for a New Century in December of 1996. The strategic discussion started from the recognition of ANCA's role as an advocate and provider of services and programs. Active throughout the North Country for fifty-two years, the planning process reaffirmed ANCA’s commitment "to economically viable communities and an improved rural quality of life." Directors enjoyed a full day of discussion and brainstorming that was facilitated by Director John Bartow.

Through Bartow's facilitation the plan identified a major shift in the Association with directors beginning to look beyond the longstanding programming of ANCA in the areas of Agriculture, Tourism, Economic Development, Services and Culture, and Natural Resources. Directors deliberated on how ANCA will focus on six broad strategies over the next four years including Enterprise and Economic Development; Quality of Life; Culture and Tourism; Working Landscapes; Capacity Development; and Regions and Subregions. ANCA's Strategic Plan 2006 – 2010 was adopted in the early part of 2006 and is a blueprint of how ANCA will provide community outreach and services to businesses and municipalities throughout the fourteen county region.

During 2005 outreach to the region's municipalities included a partnership grant in December with the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV) to the New York State Quality Community Program for a project to address water and sewer infrastructure in the region. As a regional planning project which will survey the AATV membership, the project will address those issues and opportunities which impact economic development in the Adirondack Park. If funded the project is a welcomed opportunity for ANCA to partner with the AATV and the sponsoring municipalities of the Towns of Chester and Arietta.

During the year, I was pleased to see that the input ANCA provided to the Northeast State Forest Association (NEFA) resulted in a Northern Forest Lands Council 10th Anniversary Forum report that was released in the spring of 2005 and endorsed by the four governors of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The report's four recommendations call for a combined commitment to the economic and environmental health of our northern communities and region. The recommendation to "invest public and private resources to develop and implement community and economic development strategies across the region to reinvigorate the rural economies of the Northern Forest" is vital to ensuring that the region’s economic future is as important as the region's environmental quality. We also participated in important discussions about public policy initiatives and regional planning and attended a follow-up visit to Senator Snowe's office in Washington to discuss the future of the Northern Forest.

During the year we initiated an exciting partnership with Heifer Project International and developed the Northern New York Farm Partnership as a network for producers involved in the Heifer project. We continued to make additional changes to ANCA’s website at www.adirondack.org to establish important connections for tourists, businesses, municipalities and members to the site. Plan to stay current about ANCA by bookmarking the website and visiting on a regular basis. We think you will be pleased with the linkages through the Adirondack North Country region.

I thank you for your ongoing participation in ANCA and look forward to seeing you throughout the upcoming year.

Sincerely,
Terry Martino signature
